Poe by Ryan, Austin, and Patrick

Edgar Allan Poe Biography

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 9th, 1809. 1 year later, his parents got a divorce and Elizibeth Poe, Edgar Allen Poe's mother, took the kids. Another year later, his mother died and he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. John Allan. In 1815, he went to a school in England and returned to the U.S. in 820. He went to the University of Virginia in 1826, but he had to drop out of school a year later because his adoptive father would not give him any money. In the same year, he published his first book and joined the military because he didn't have enough money. In 1829, he returned home and went to Westpoint, but got kicked out two years later. Poe's work was rejected and he couldn't get a job until 1835 when he won a poetry contest. In May in 1836, he married his cousin, Virginia. He continued to barely make a living off of his poetry and his life stayed about the same until January 30th, 1847 when his wife died of tuberculosis. He drank heavily because of this and joined The Sons of Temperance to try to stop drinking. He was found barely conscious on October 3rd in 1849. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, but it was not enough and he died 4 days later on October 7th.
