Edgar was adopted by John Allan and Francis Valentine Allan, his brother and sister went to separate homes. Poe also went to school in England for five years when he was only six years old. He went to the university of Virginia at only seventeen. John Allan didn't give him enough money so Edgar began to drink, fell into debt and had to drop out a year later. Poe had no money and was shunned by John Allan so he went to Boston to join the army, he was eighteen. He finished in the army as a sergeant. In 1829 Mrs. Allan died also from tuberculosis. Edgar and John Allan got along for a short time because of this and he even signed papers for Poe to apply to West Point. Edgar lived with multiple family members while waiting to go to West Point, he stayed with his Aunt and cousin Virginia for a short time. When Poe got to West Point John Allan refused to give him money so he purposely got kicked out. While in financial trouble Poe wrote a desperate letter to John Allan but he didn't respond. John Allan died in 1834 and left Edgar out of his will. In 1835 Poe finally got a job as an editor of a newspaper. In 1836 Poe married his cousin Virginia who was only thirteen, he was twenty-seven. Virginia's health began to fade after one night when she coughed up blood. Virginia died in 1847 from tuberculosis like his mother and adoptive mother did. Poe had a very rough time after Virginia died. On September 30th,  1849 he was supposed to go to New York but supposedly took the wrong bus and ended up in Baltimore.
