Edgar Allan Poe's relationships and marriages

Elmira Royster- A neighborhood girl Poe fell in love with, but her father opposed their plans for marriage because Edgar had little plans for money and few prospects

Virginia Clemm- Poe's first wife. She is also his cousin and was 12 years old when they got married while Poe was 27 years old . She died at the age of 24

Sarah Helen- After exchanging several letters with her, Poe traveled to Sarah's house in Providence and, unsuccessfully tried to persuade the well-to-do widow to marry him

Annie L. Richmond- Poe met Annie when he lectured in Lowell, Massachusetts, and the two became close friends and she helped him cope with grief and loneliness. Poe's letters to her are filled with professions of love and pleas for her presence.

Frances Osgood- While Virginia lay sick at home, Poe attended many parties in New York City surrounded by woman admirers, is how he met the poet Frances Osgood. The two exchanged many poems and love letters.

Elmira Royster Shelton- the same girl who fell in love with Poe during their childhood, was now a rich widow living in a fine Richmond home. Poe resumed courting his long-ago sweetheart. After Poe swore off drinking, she agreed to marry him. They never got married though.
