Beatings: after Poe death a rumor spread that he was beaten and dies. Poe was found in the bar-room unlike how he dresses.
Rabies: they thought that he died of alcohol poisoning. He was at a bar 4 days before he died. He suffered hallucinations, fits, amnesia,and hydrophobia all symptoms of rabies.
Heart: Poe was pale and trembling. His condition was serious enough that two doctors thought he was in "imminent danger" and the other"attack" would kill him.
